This book presents current research that discusses some of the major issues in pragmatics from new perspectives, and directs attention to aspects of fundamental tenets that have been investigated only to a limited extent. Current pragmatic theories emphasize the importance of intention, cooperation, common ground, mutual knowledge, relevance, and commitment in executing communicative acts. However, recent research in cognitive psychology, linguistic pragmatics, and intercultural communication has raised questions that warrant some revision of these major tenets. Debates about the place of intention in pragmatics have indicated that Gricean intentions may play a less central role in communication than traditionally assumed. Cognitive psychologists pointed out that individual, egocentric endeavors of interlocutors play a much more decisive role in the initial stages of production and comprehension than current pragmatic theories envision. Some researchers criticized the Clark and Brennan's common ground model and Clark's contribution theory arguing that these approaches retain a communication-as-transfer-between-minds view of language, and treat intentions and goals as pre-existing psychological entities that are later somehow formulated in language. All these developments are addressed in the papers of the volume written by prominent scholars representing several disciplines.

Anita Steube - The Discourse Potential of Underspecified Structures
The volume demonstrates the interdependence of mans language capacity and his other conceptual capacities. This enables linguistic structures to be minimalised, and for extra-linguistic domains to provide much of the interpretations of sound and meaning. Underspecification is demonstrated in the word formation of Indo-European, Late Archaic Chinese and modern Khmer; on the word- and sentence levels by the event structures of German; and in the information structure predominantly of languages with the so-called free word order: German, Slavic languages, Arabic compared with English and the tone language Hausa. The volume is noteworthy due to the close cooperation between theoretical and experimental research. Within grammar, it has especially strengthened prosodic research and the syntax-phonology interrelations and their interpretations, and it has helped to create data bases for the relations within texts and to evaluate the findings.

The Definitive Book of Body Language
This Very Short Introduction discusses Judaism as a living religion in all its contemporary richness and variety. How has it changed since the days of the Bible, or even since the time of Jesus. What sects and divisions does it have, and how does it respond to the challenges of modernity? How does the secular state of Israel resolve the conflicts of Church and State?

Atheism: A Very Short Introduction
Atheism is often considered a negative, dark, and pessimistic belief characterised by a rejection of values and purpose, and in fierce opposition to religion. Atheism: A Very Short Introduction sets out to dispel the myths that surround atheism and explain how a life without religious belief can be positive, meaningful, and moral. It also confronts the failure of officially atheist states in the 20th century. The book presents an intellectual case for atheism that rests as much upon positive arguments for its truth as on negative arguments against religion.

Caterina Mauri - Coordination Relations in the Languages of Europe and Beyond
This book examines the coding of the three coordination relations of combination, contrast and alternative between states of affairs on the basis of a 74 language sample, with special focus on the languages spoken in Europe. It constitutes the first systematic inquiry so far conducted on the cross-linguistic coding of coordination, as defined in cognitive and pragmatic terms. This research shows that the 'and-but-or' coding system which is typical of Central-Western Europe appears to be extremely rare outside Europe, where a great variation in the coding of coordination is attested. This cross-linguistic variation, however, is not random, but is crucially constrained by the interaction of economic principles with the semantic properties of the individual relations expressed. A fine-grained functional systematization of coordination is proposed and described by means of implicational patterns and semantic maps. This work brings together a broad cross-linguistic perspective and a detailed semantic analysis, largely based on new and comparable data collected by means of questionnaires, all accessible in the appendix of the book. It represents the first systematic attempt towards a unified typology of coordination relations.

The Cambridge Companion to David Hare (Cambridge Companions to Literature)
David Hare is one of the most important playwrights to have emerged in the UK in the last forty years. This volume examines his stage plays, television plays and cinematic films, and is the first book of its kind to offer such comprehensive and up-to-date critical treatment. Contributions from leading academics in the study of modern British theatre sit alongside those from practitioners who have worked closely with Hare throughout his career, including former Director of the National Theatre Sir Richard Eyre. Uniquely, the volume also includes a chapter on Hare's work as journalist and public speaker; a personal memoir by Tony Bicât, co-founder with Hare of the enormously influential Portable Theatre; and an interview with Hare himself in which he offers a personal retrospective of his career as a film maker which is his fullest and clearest account of that work to date.

The Philosophical Actor: A Practical Meditation for Practicing Theatre Artists
There have been many books published on acting, actor training, and practical theories for preparing for a role, but none of these books have ever looked philosophically at the language and the concepts that we use when we talk about acting. The Philosophical Actor is the first attempt to grapple with the fundamental questions of truth, art, and human nature unexamined in past treatments, from the first great essay by Diderot to the exhaustive system described by Stanislavski. With wide appeal to actors, directors, acting students, acting teachers and trainers, Donna Soto-Morettini draws from twenty-five years of experience as an acting teacher and director to introduce innovative ways of thinking about acting.

Webster's New World Dictionary: 2nd College Edition
Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language is an American dictionary first published in 1951 and currently published by John Wiley & Sons.
The first edition was published by the World Publishing Company of Cleveland, Ohio, in two volumes or one large volume, including a large encyclopedic section. In 1953, World published a one-volume college edition, without the encyclopedic material. It was edited by Joseph H. Friend and David B. Guralnik and contained 142,000 entries, said to be the largest American desk dictionary available at the time.
The second college edition, edited by Guralnik, was published in 1970. World Publishing was acquired by Simon and Schuster in 1980 and they continued the work with a third edition in 1989 edited by Victoria Neufeldt. A fourth edition was published in 1998 and contains 160,000 entries.
One of the salient features of Webster's New World dictionaries has been an unusually full etymology, that is, the origin and development of words and the relationship of words to other Indo-European languages. The work also labels words which have a distinctly American origin.
Pearson bought the reference division of Simon & Schuster in 1998 and sold it to IDG Books in 1999. John Wiley & Sons acquired IDG Books (renamed Hungry Minds) in 2001. The college edition is the official desk dictionary of the Associated Press[1] and The New York Times.
Although the title refers to Noah Webster, the work is unrelated to the series of Webster's dictionaries published by the Merriam-Webster Company, which indeed are descended directly from Noah Webster's original publications. By contrast, Webster's New World Dictionary merely cites Webster as a generic name for any American English dictionary, as does Random House's line of Webster's Dictionaries.
Webster's New World student and children's dictionaries are of particular interest to young readers.

Anna Saunders - The Essence and the Margin
With the expansion of the EU and calls for a European constitution, the question of a common European identity has become increasingly pressing in recent times. However, in the face of diverse national and regional traditions - and the absence of an obvious European cultural imaginary - the forging of a strong sense of European identity proves problematic. This volume brings together case studies of national and regional images from across Europe, which together suggest emerging patterns of identification within contemporary Europe - patterns which may not necessarily amount to a European 'identity', but rather to a European 'mode' of identification. The chronological structure of the volume demonstrates the increasingly problematic nature of national collective memories and past imaginaries in light of emergent marginal voices and images, and suggests that it is both from beyond and within the national paradigm that new challenges are now reshaping the cultural imaginary of European communities. Focusing on cultural images within film, literature, national narratives and myths, museum exhibitions and architecture, this volume is of interest to a wide variety of disciplines in the humanities, and presents an interdisciplinary approach to questions of cultural memory and identity formation.

Making the Grade: Reinventing America's Schools (repost)
Making the Grade represents the beginning of an overdue public dialogue: How can today's schools - and schools of the future - respond to sweeping societal changes if they remain mired in an obsolete system.
What should all students know in the 21st century, and who should decide? What do good schools - where all children learn - look like, and how do they involve parents and motivate students and teachers to do their best? In this thorough and informative book, Wagner considers whether schools should teach values and what roles tests should play in the system. His surprising answers to these questions lay the groundwork for a strategy to reinvent the public school. The prototype he introduces, the "New Village School," is organized around "the 4C's": competency-based curriculum, core values, collaboration and community.

Malik Goes to School (repost)
Malik Goes to School: Examining the Language Skills of African American Students From Pre-School-5th Grade synthesizes a decade of research by the authors, Holly Craig and Julie Washington, on the oral language and literacy skills of African American children from preschool to fifth grade. Their research has characterized significant influences on the child's use of AAE and the relationship between AAE and aspects of literacy acquisition. The research has also led to the characterization of other nondialectal aspects of language development. The outcome has been a culture-fair, child-centered language evaluation protocol.

Sounds English: Pronunciation Practice Book (with Audio CD)
In this pronunciation course for intermediate students of English, each unit provides intensive practice in stress and intonation of particular sound contrasts. Designed for students working alone as well as for classroom use it provides an intonation list and language chart to help students work out their particular area of difficulty and plan their programme. The intonation list explains key intonation patterns of English, and shows where they are practises. The language chart - for 15 languages - shows which English sound contrasts are difficult for speakers of each language. An introductory unit with notes facing the exercises explains how the tasks are organized. All 31 units can be used independently of each other and in any order. Numbered and graded tasks in each unit lead students from simple contrasts eg too/do to intensive practice in the stress and intonation of the particular sound contrasts in relation to connected material found in real life. The book aims to integrate the practice of intonation patterns with sounds and to use realistic texts and conversations for the practice material. A spelling box in each unit shows how the sounds can be spelled and a key to the listening tasks is included at the back of the book.

Jacob Wackernagel, Lectures on Syntax: With Special Reference to Greek, Latin, and Germanic
This book is an English version of two series of highly acclaimed introductory lectures given by the great Swiss linguist and classical philologist Jacob Wackernagel (1853-1938) at the University of Basle in 1918-19 on aspects of Greek, Latin, and German as languages. Out of print in German since 1996, these lectures remain the best available introduction, in any language, not only to Greek, Latin, and comparative syntax but also to many topics in the history and pre-history of Greek and Latin, and their relations with other languages.
Other subjects, such as the history of grammatical terminology, are also brilliantly dealt with. This new edition supplements the German original by providing a translation of all quotations and examples, a large number of detailed footnotes offering background information and suggestions for further reading, and a single bibliography which brings together Wackernagel's references and those added in the notes.

History Of Reading (Globalities)
Reading started in ancient Asia and the Americas, re-emerged in Europe in the Middle Ages and was reinvented by the development of printing. The explosion of the book trade, of newspapers, public readings and public libraries swept reading into 19th century educational reforms and onwards towards the present cyber-age, in which read communication looks set to exceed oral communication. This highly innovative account, the last in Fischer's trilogy, is a complete history of a ubiquitous yet mysterious art.
Of the three volumes in Steven Roger Fischer's hugely ambitious and sedulously executed trilogy, the first two dealt with language and writing. This one, however, is the most suggestive and open, dedicated not only to the technicalities of his subject but to the everyday experience of communication... Fischer lets his historical readers speak for themselves, ceaselessly seduced by textual magic The Independent Starting from the Bronze Age and ending with modern emails and a possible future of e-books, Steven Fischer's A History of Reading takes in a wonderful diversity of things Nature It's an exciting story, which the author tells clearly and chronologically Daily Telegraph

Japanese Brush Painting [Repost]
Japanese brush painting is a relatively recent development and emerged out of the Buddhist schools of calligraphy (Shodo). The ancient art of Japanese brush painting, or sumi-e, is strikingly beautiful, simple and pure, yet strong and resonant. Closely related to Zen philosophy, the art of sumi-e is executed with black ink on white rice paper using bamboo brushes. Subjects in Japanese brush painting include landscapes, flowers, or animals, anything that suggests a closeness to the natural world.

Demons of the Body and Mind: Essays on Disability in Gothic Literature
The Gothic mode, typically preoccupied by questions of difference and otherness, consistently imagines the Other as a source of grotesque horror. The sixteen critical essays in this collection examine the ways in which those suffering from mental and physical ailments are refigured as Other, and how they are imagined to be monstrous. Together, the essays highlight the Gothic inclination to represent all ailments as visibly monstrous, even those, such as mental illness, which were invisible. Paradoxically, the Other also becomes a pitiful figure, often evoking empathy. This exploration of illness and disability represents a strong addition to Gothic studies.

Gilbert and Gubar's the Madwoman in the Attic After Thirty Years
When it was published in 1979, Sandra M. Gilbert and Susan Gubar's "The Madwoman in the Attic: The Woman Writer and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Imagination" was hailed as a path-breaking work of criticism, changing the way future scholars would read Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, the Brontes, George Eliot, and Emily Dickinson. This thirtieth-anniversary collection adds both valuable reassessments and new readings and analyses inspired by Gilbert and Gubar's approach. It includes work by established and up-and-coming scholars, as well as retrospective accounts of the ways in which "The Madwoman in the Attic" has influenced teaching, feminist activism, and the lives of women in academia. These contributions represent both the diversity of today's feminist criticism and the tremendous expansion of the nineteenth-century canon. The authors take as their subjects specific nineteenth- and twentieth-century women writers, the state of feminist theory and pedagogy, genre studies, film, race, and postcolonialism, with approaches ranging from eco-feminism to psychoanalysis. And although each essay opens "Madwoman" to a different page, all provocatively circle back - with admiration and respect, objections and challenges, questions and arguments - to Gilbert and Gubar's groundbreaking work. The essays are as diverse as they are provocative. Susan Fraiman describes how "Madwoman" opened the canon, politicized critical practice, and challenged compulsory heterosexuality, while Marlene Tromp tells how it embodied many concerns central to second-wave feminism. Other chapters consider "Madwoman"'s impact on Milton studies and on cinematic adaptations of "Wuthering Heights". In the thirty years since its publication, "The Madwoman in the Attic" has potently informed literary criticism of women's writing: its strategic analyses of canonical works and its insights into the interconnections between social environment and human creativity have been absorbed by contemporary critical practices. These essays constitute substantive interventions into established debates and ongoing questions among scholars concerned with defining third-wave feminism, showing that, as a feminist symbol, the raging madwoman still has the power to disrupt conventional ideas about gender, myth, sexuality, and the literary imagination.

Marianne Hundt; Nadja Nesselhauf; Carolin Biewer - Corpus Linguistics and the Web
Using the Web as Corpus is one of the recent challenges for corpus linguistics. This volume presents a current state-of-the-arts discussion of the topic. The articles address practical problems such as suitable linguistic search tools for accessing the www, the question of register variation, or they probe into methods for culling data from the web. The book also offers a wide range of case studies, covering morphology, syntax, lexis, as well as synchronic and diachronic variation in English. These case studies make use of the two approaches to the www in corpus linguistics - web-as-corpus and web-for-corpus-building. The case studies demonstrate that web data can provide useful additional evidence for a broad range of research questions.

Linda D. Behen - Using Pop Culture to Teach Information Literacy: Methods to Engage a New Generation
There is serious discussion in the media about today's youth, the "Echo Boomers," and their connection with technology. Our high school students tell us that they have few meals with their families, that they want their teachers and their school's decision makers to listen to them and take their ideas seriously, and that they use the little free time they have to talk to or instant message with their friends or to play video games. Author and media critic Jon Katz says, "Technology is youth culture. These kids are building a revolution. Technology is part of their ideology, their language, everything they do." Building on the information needs and the learning style preferences of today's high school students, the author builds a case for using pop culture (TV shows, fads and current technology) to build integrated information-skills lessons for students. Chapters include a rationale, a review of the current literature, and examples of units of study incorporating popular culture and technology.

Jianhai Xiang - Marine Science & Technology in China: A Roadmap to 2050
As one of the eighteen field-specific reports comprising the comprehensive scope of the strategic general report of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, this sub-report addresses long-range planning for developing science and technology in the field of marine science. They each craft a roadmap for their sphere of development to 2050. In their entirety, the general and sub-group reports analyze the evolution and laws governing the development of science and technology, describe the decisive impact of science and technology on the modernization process, predict that the world is on the eve of an impending S&T revolution, and call for China to be fully prepared for this new round of S&T advancement. Based on the detailed study of the demands on S&T innovation in China's modernization, the reports draw a framework for eight basic and strategic systems of socio-economic development with the support of science and technology, work out China's S&T roadmaps for the relevant eight basic and strategic systems in line with China's reality, further detail S&T initiatives of strategic importance to China's modernization, and provide S&T decision-makers with comprehensive consultations for the development of S&T innovation consistent with China's reality. Supported by illustrations and tables of data, the reports provide researchers, government officials and entrepreneurs with guidance concerning research directions, the planning process, and investment.
Founded in 1949, the Chinese Academy of Sciences is the nation's highest academic institution in natural sciences. Its major responsibilities are to conduct research in basic and technological sciences, to undertake nationwide integrated surveys on natural resources and ecological environment, to provide the country with scientific data and consultations for government's decision-making, to undertake government-assigned projects with regard to key S&T problems in the process of socio-economic development, to initiate personnel training, and to promote China's high-tech enterprises through its active engagement in these areas.

Michael Hanne, Creativity in Exile
Until recently, discussion of ‘creativity in exile’ has focussed almost exclusively on a few European male writers, from Dante to Joseph Brodsky, who sought refuge abroad from political oppression. This volume, with accompanying 100-minute DVD, ranges much more widely, to examine the extraordinary creative endeavours in a range of media of men and women in almost every part of the world who, for a host of different reasons, have experienced displacement from their homelands. It brings together papers by academics, many of whom have experienced exile themselves, on topics as diverse as: the visual arts in Colombia, fiction by displaced indigenous peoples, convicts and slaves as exiles, writings about the partition of Bengal, the culture of Palestinian Americans, philosophers on exile, and the significance of cooking to refugee communities, which are interspersed with poems by contemporary writers in exile. The use of the DVD format has permitted the inclusion of: studio interviews with notable exiled writers from Nigeria, Cyprus and Bulgaria, extracts from two films relating to exile, a live reading of his work by an Iraqi poet, an audio and sculptural installation by a First Nations Canadian artist, and a performance by musicians in exile from Burundi.

Jeffrey Ullom - The Humana Festival: The History of New Plays at Actors Theatre of Louisville
Far from the glittering lights of Broadway, in a city known more for its horse racing than its artistic endeavors, an annual festival in Louisville, Kentucky, has transformed the landscape of the American theater. The Actors Theatre of Louisville—the Tony Award–winning state theater of Kentucky—in 1976 successfully created what became the nation's most respected new-play festival, the Humana Festival of New American Plays.
The Humana Festival: The History of New Plays at Actors Theatre of Louisville examines the success of the festival and theater’s Pulitzer Prize–winning productions that for decades have reflected new-play trends in regional theaters and on Broadway—the result of the calculated decisions, dogged determination, and good luck of its producing director, Jon Jory.
The volume details how Actors Theatre of Louisville was established, why the Humana Festival became successful in a short time, and how the event’s success has been maintained by the Louisville venue that has drawn theater critics from around the world for more than thirty years.
Author Jeffrey Ullom charts the theater’s early struggles to survive, the battles between troupe leaders, and the desperate measures to secure financial support from the Louisville community. He examines how Jory established and expanded the festival to garner extraordinary local support, attract international attention, and entice preeminent American playwrights to premier their works in the Kentucky city.
In The Humana Festival, Ullom provides a broad view of new-play development within artistic, administrative, and financial contexts. He analyzes the relationship between Broadway and regional theaters, outlining how the Humana Festival has changed the process of new-play development and even Broadway’s approach to discovering new work, and also highlights the struggles facing regional theaters across the country as they strive to balance artistic ingenuity and economic viability.
Offering a rare look at the annual event, The Humana Festival provides the first insider’s view of the extraordinary efforts that produced the nation’s most successful new-play festival.

Robert J. Blackwood - The State, the Activists and the Islanders: Language Policy on Corsica
This analysis of language policy on Corsica provides the first study of the three levels of language policy existing on the Mediterranean island of Corsica. It focuses on the key participants - the State, the language activists and the islanders - in the language debate that has taken place across the island since its purchase by France. This book is informed by recent work on language planning, both theoretical and relating to specific case studies. At the same time, it engages with trends in sociolinguistics over the past decades, which have included language planning in their investigations of languages in contact, language obsolescence and language death. A central premise of this book is that the three discrete categories of participants in the language debate are closely interrelated and that the status and position of Corsican in relation to French cannot be understood without a thorough exploration of these three strands. This volume will appeal to researchers and students in French Studies, sociolinguistics, and especially language policy.

The Seven Basic Plots: Why We Tell Stories
From The Epic of Gilgemesh to Jaws and Schindler's List, Christopher Booker examines in detail the stories that underlie literature and the plots that are basic to story telling through the ages. In this magisterial work he examines the plots of films, opera libretti and the contemporary novel and short story. Underlying the stories he examines are Seven Basic Plots: rags to riches; the quest; voyage and return; the hero as monster; rebirth and so on. Booker shows that the images and stories serve a far deeper and more significant purpose in our lives than we have realised. In the definition of these basic plots, Booker shows us we are entering a realm in which the recognition of the plots proves only to be the gateway. We are in fact uncovering a kind of hidden universal language: a nucleus of situations and figures which are the very stuff from which stories are made.
With Booker's exploration, there is literally no story in the world which cannot be seen in a new light: we have come to the heart of what stories are about and why we tell them. Here, Christopher Booker moves on from some of the themes he outlined in his hugely bestselling book The Neophiliacs. Seven Basic Plots is unquestionably his most important book to date.

Jette Hansen - Acquiring a Non-Native Phonology
This is a study of the phonological development of a family of L2 English learners. It is the first full-length book that focuses on a tightly-knit group of learners' acquisition of phonology over a longitudinal timeframe, and the first book to study both social and linguistic factors across that time period. Jette G. Hansen analyses this data gathered from actual language learners in the light of recent theory, as well as challenging aspects of current thinking on the subject of second language acquisition. Acquiring a Non-Native Phonology therefore makes an important and original contribution to the field and provides an in-depth analysis and discussion of the developmental processes in acquiring a non-native sound system which has not previously been presented. The book is aimed at academics interested in second language acquisition, and researchers studying phonology in general

Juan de Palafox y Mendoza - Virtudes del Indio / The Virtues of the Indian
Presented in a parallel text translation, this important book brings the work of the controversial and powerful Bishop Juan de Palafox to non-Spanish speakers for the first time. A seminal document in the history of colonial Mexico and imperial Spain, Virtues of the Indian tells us as much about the Mexican natives as about the ideas, images, and representations upon which the Spanish Empire in America was built. The deeply-informed introduction, biographical essay, and annotations that accompany this vivid translation further explore the turbulent Palafox's thought and actions, contributing to a better knowledge of a key figure in the history of Spanish colonialism in the New World.

J. M. Coetzee and the Paradox of Postcolonial Authorship
The first comprehensive account of J. M. Coetzee's literary career, this book illuminates the author's life-long engagement with the problems of colonialism and 'post colonialism.' How successful has this member of a white South African academic elite been in accommodating his various roles as author, public intellectual, and citizen? What are the ethics of writing fiction within postcolonial and, more specifically, South African contexts? Has Coetzee's withdrawal from the public domain problematized his portrayals of a series of author-protagonists writing under apartheid and postapartheid conditions? What does Coetzee's criticism on writers like D. H. Lawrence, Samuel Beckett, and Dostoevsky tell us about his own works? From Dusklands to Disgrace and from Waiting for the Barbarians to Elizabeth Costello, Jane Poyner traces how Coetzee rehearses and revises his understanding of the ethics of intellectualism in parallel with the emergency of the 'new South Africa.' She contends that Coetzee not only introduces a singularly modernist reading of the South African situation to the field of postcolonial studies but also makes postcolonial interventions into the modernist tradition by reworking novels of this literary movement. In addition, she is attentive to the ways his writing reflects Coetzee's evolving views of the writer's proper role with respect to the changing ethical demands of contemporary political life. Both theoretically sophisticated and accessibly written, her book is a major contribution to our understanding of the Nobel Laureate and to postcolonial studies.

The Tempest (Shakespeare Explained)
With neon-colored graphics and lively texts written by literature professors, the titles in the Shakespeare Explained series offer engaging introductions to the Bard’s work. Each title in the series begins with the same wide-ranging introduction, written by Joseph Sobran, which covers Shakespeare’s enduring place in literature, the politics and culture of his world, speculations about the true authorship of his works, and recommendations of the best film adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays. The following chapters discuss a specific work at length, with an overview and discussion of the play’s plot, major characters, themes, motifs, and language. In The Tempest, it is Krueger’s lively, opinionated, and knowledgeable analysis of the complex play that will easily draw students into further discussion. Many of the visuals in both volumes, including numerous film stills and stage-production photos, aim for a hip effect; The Tempest, for example, features a green-skinned, mohawked Ariel on its cover. Brief plot quizzes, a chronology, suggested essay topics, resource lists, and a bibliography conclude each volume in this approachable series that’s sure to find wide classroom use. Grades 7-12.

The Fat Flush Fitness Plan
The perfect fitness plan for low-carb dieters--accelerate the incredible weight loss power of the Fat Flush diet with this revolutionary fitness plan!
The Fat Flush Fitness Plan, written by a powerhouse team, offers Joanie Greggains' detailed exercise program, designed to complement Ann Louise Gittleman's The Fat Flush Plan. Gittleman is a high-profile nutritionist, frequently featured in the media. Veteran fitness expert Greggains, author of Fit Happens, hosted television's long-running "Morning Stretch" and leads 15 workout videos. Greggains emphasizes low-impact aerobics, weight training, stretching, more sleep, and calmer living.
The eating program (you'll need Gittleman's other books for the details) hinges on Gittleman's premise that "cleansing the liver and the lymphatic system is absolutely crucial for physical health, weight loss, and an overall sense of well-being." This isn't a quick-fix program, but a long-term, lifestyle change including yoga, walking or rebounding, strength training with a weighted ball, stretching, lymphatic massage, and aromatherapy baths.
Start with Phase 1: "Detox, Start Moving--and Relax"; add strength training in Phase 2: "Build Lean Muscle Mass"; increase cardio and change the strength routine in Phase 3: "Lymph-Fit/Compound Strength and Stretching Plan." All phases present a step-by-step, clearly illustrated exercise program. The book is nicely designed, with clear photographs, boxed tips, write-in questionnaires, pledges, and a sample journal. --Joan Price

The Book of Sushi (Repost)
Discover how to enjoy the sushi shop with savoir-faire, how to become a connoisseur, and even how to make and serve this intriguing, delightfully refreshing dish in your own home. Sushi, that so typical Japanese food, has a history going back to prehistoric times. Over the centuries it has been refined into a surprising number of variations, from the simplest everyday fare--such as tuna wrapped in vinegared rice and crisp vitamin-rich nori seaweed--to elegant and imaginative sushi created for festive occasions.
The centerpiece of this book is Edomae-zushi, the delicate, natural, fresh variety first made in Tokyo in the early nineteenth century and now popular throughout the world. The sushi shop, with its scrubbed wooden counter and fillets of raw fish sleeping in refrigerated cases right before the diner's eyes, is a memorable experience in itself but faced with such variety--and the special vocabulary of the sushi world--how and what does one order, how does one truly appreciate it? The answers are all here. The reader of The Book of Sushi will come to understand the basics of what the sushi chef must learn during his long apprenticeship: how fish and other seafoods are carefully selected, the season when certain species are at their best, how the fish and rice and other ingredientssome fresh from the mountains rather than the sea--are prepared in the most tasteful and tasty way. Here, too, are the utensils and techniques, fully illustrated, of sushi making and an assessment of the nutritional value of this marvelous, low-calorie source of vitamins and healthy, uncontaminated protein. The focus is always on the traditional--the best sushi--and with this beautifully illustrated book as a guide, the reader will know not only how to enjoy the sushi shop with savoir-faire, how, in fact, to become a connoisseur, but how to make and serve this intriguing, delightfully refreshing dish at home. Whether you're a near connoisseur or virtual novice, there's always more to learn about sushi. The Book of Sushi is jammed with tips on how to make these succulent morsels yourself, or order them like a veteran at a sushi bar. Learn to tell at a glance if fish is really fresh. Learn just what the sushi master's training entails. Learn just how good for you this dish really is. There's just one drawback: the more you learn about sushi, the more you'll probably start liking it. You may find sushi getting to be a habit. This is a guide for the lover of sushi, whether eating in restaurants or preparing it at home.

Plus, get to the bottom of bottles, barrels and breweries and discover how to identify the labels, choose the correct glasses and locate the breweries. This is an exciting addition to "Eyewitness Companions"; the visual reference series covering favourite hobbies and pastimes from French Cheeses and Opera to Horse Riding.
