Principles of Synthetic Intelligence PSI: An Architecture of Motivated Cognition

"In this book Joscha Bach introduces Dietrich Dörner's PSI architecture and Joscha's implementation of the MicroPSI architecture. These architectures and their implementation have several lessons for other architectures and models. Most notably, the PSI architecture includes drives and thus directly addresses questions of emotional behavior. An architecture including drives helps clarify how emotions could arise. It also changes the way that the architecture works on a fundamental level, providing an architecture more suited for behaving autonomously in a simulated world. PSI includes three types of drives, physiological (e.g., hunger), social (i.e., affiliation needs), and cognitive (i.e., reduction of uncertainty and expression of competency). These drives routinely influence goal formation and knowledge selection and application. The resulting architecture generates new kinds of behaviors, including context dependent memories, socially motivated behavior, and internally motivated task switching. This architecture illustrates how emotions and physical drives can be included in an embodied cognitive architecture. The PSI architecture, while including perceptual, motor, learning, and cognitive processing components, also includes several novel knowledge representations: temporal structures, spatial memories, and several new information processing mechanisms and behaviors, including progress through types of knowledge sources when problem solving (the Rasmussen ladder), and knowledge-based hierarchical active vision. These mechanisms and representations suggest ways for making other architectures more realistic, more accurate, and easier to use. The architecture is demonstrated in the Island simulated environment. While it may look like a simple game, it was carefully designed to allow multiple tasks to be pursued and provides ways to satisfy the multiple drives. It would be useful in its own right for developing other architectures interested in multi-tasking, long-term learning, social interaction, embodied architectures, and related aspects of behavior that arise in a complex but tractable real-time environment. The resulting models are not presented as validated cognitive models, but as theoretical explorations in the space of architectures for generating behavior. The sweep of the architecture can thus be larger-it presents a new cognitive architecture attempting to provide a unified theory of cognition. It attempts to cover perhaps the largest number of phenomena to date. This is not a typical cognitive modeling work, but one that I believe that we can learn much from."

ETFE: Technology and Design

ETFE foil has recently become an important material for the cladding of technologically sophisticated and innovative buildings. This material is very thin and lightweight and, when used in air-filled cushion assemblies, has enormous strength and a range of adaptive environmental attributes. ETFE cushion enclosures became known primarily through Grimshaw Architects’ Eden Project and Herzog + de Meuron’s Allianz Arena, and they are being used on the spectacular swimming stadium for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the largest ETFE building envelope in the world so far.
This book is conceived as an in-depth introduction to the characteristics of ETFE and its applications in construction. Intended for the general public, students, and professionals, the Encyclopedia of 20th-Century Architecture contains more than 700 alphabetically arranged entries providing basic information on a variety of subjects. Articles range from 1,000 to 4,000 words.

Volume 1 has a list of entries and a separate list of entries arranged by theme. Themes include "Architects and Firms" (the largest category, with 267 entries); "Building Types" (52 entries); "Buildings and Sites" (172 entries); "Countries and Regions" (35 entries); "Materials and Building Technology" (36 entries); and others. Examples of topics include Acoustics; Bank of China Tower; Concrete; Gas station; Israel; Paul, Bruno; Tent; and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Articles on buildings include designer name(s), date of completion, and location and often describe design features, architectural themes and influences, and challenges in design. For example, the article on the AEG Turbine Factory touches on the somewhat contentious relationship between designer and engineer. Articles on architects zero in on the person's architectural career, describing major achievements, philosophy of design, and impact on the architectural community.

All articles are signed, and most end with a list of related topics as well as a list of suggested readings. The lack of Internet sites will disappoint some researchers. Articles on people often include a list of their selected works and publications.

Volume 3 provides a cumulative subject index with main entries listed in bold. The 600 mostly black-and-white illustrations usually show exterior shots of buildings. The lack of detailed illustrations highlighting specific design features forces readers to rely on text descriptions, which the general reader might find challenging.

The international coverage of not only architects and buildings but also building materials, locations, movements, and other architectural topics distinguishes this resource from reference tools such as the Encyclopedia of Vernacular Architecture of the World (Cambridge Univ., 1997) and the International Dictionary of Architects and Architecture (St. James, 1993). This is the finest book on Frank Lloyd Wright furniture. As the owner of Frank Lloyd Wright's 1901 E. Arthur Davenport and a Restoration Architect, I have extensively researched Wright's furniture and books on the topic. This large format comprehensive book is a compendium of great FLW furniture with beautiful period and contemporary photographs. The accompanying text is well researched and very informative. Highly recommended.

Frank Lloyd Wright began designing furniture over 100 years ago and yet this is the only comprehensive book on his 75 years of work. The book offers contemporary and historical views of many Wright interiors featuring the furniture in the original context for the most part. Much of this furniture has now been removed from the houses. Several of these pieces are on view in museums but much of it went into private collections. The range of views of the furniture is unique to the kind of book that Heinz has become well-known for. He finds views that can show features and arrangements of parts that other photographers seem to be blind to. When Heinz includes more than one example of a chair, either by using two chairs of the same design but faced front and side, or by including several designs [as in the Dana House] or with the designs of others [with Mackintosh, Stickley and the Greene brothers] they tell more than any text or caption could. The large page format is also helpful in showing the detail of each example. The types of wood and grain directions as well as finishes and textures assists in the analysis of the work. Heinz even goes outside the title definition of the book and includes associated examples of Wright's work as the chapter on rugs and textiles shows well. This may be the only concentration of Wright's textile designs. This is refreshing, to see the originals. in light of the "interpretations" that are now in the marketplace confusing the issue and the real genius of Wright's work. Interiors and Furniutre is a great companion book to Heinz's Glass Art which was issued at the same time and by the same publisher as this volume. This will be the definitive work for many years to come.

Alberto Campo Baeza Works and Projects (Repost)

Campo Baeza's poetics is the outcome of a complex and wide-ranging dialogue with architectural history that has provided him no so much with a set of formal models as with a repertoire of compositional strategies, raising questions of method which he has answered by inverting Mies van der Rohe's celebrated dictum "less is more" to give "mas con menos", more with less. The fact that achieving "more with less" is Campo Baeza's ultimate aim, and that variation rather than variety is one of the fundamental and most characteristic techniques he employs in his architecture, only goes to show how superficial the efforts of critics have been in attempting to reduce the tectonic austerity and luminarist poetry of his buildings to just another form of minimalism. Campo Baeza's simplified assemblies of primary geometric forms carry the rejection of decoration to disconcerting, almost hermetic extremes.

Marilyn Joyce Segal Chiat - Handbook of Synagogue Architecture

The contents of the book are both larger and more restricted than the title suggests. It deals not only with synagogue remains but also with ornamental,
epigraphic, numismatic evidence uncovered within the boundaries of ancient Palestine. These boundaries are not derived from talmudic or biblical sources, but are the limits of the city-territories formed by the Romans, following their conquest of the country. The author has opted for this division because she assumes that "Rome's division of Palestine accurately reflects the religious, social, and cultural configurations of the province" (p. 6). This option, however, forces her to include in her list a good number of places in which there are no remains at all of synagogues (e.g. more than half of the 17 entries east of the Jordan river). The chronological limits of the Handbook are nowhere clearly stated. In fact, the author deals only with synagogue remains from the first seven centuries of the common era.
Within these limits of time and place, she has attempted to collect the available evidence about: (1) name of the site and map reference; (2) survey of the site; (3) character and sections of the building; (4) measurements; (5) orientation; (6) character and form: apse, niche, Torah shrine, bema, chancel; (7) auxiliary rooms and structures; (8) ornamenta- tion ; (9) coins, ceramics, and artifacts found within the building complex; (10) inscriptions; (11) donors and patrons; (12) date; (13) selected bibliography. We have before us a card-index system, arranged according to the seven regions and forty-four city-territories (or districts) of the Roman province of Palestine, rather than a digest.
The problems with the Handbook start with the definitions used and the assumptions lying behind them. All the entries are classified in one of three categories: I. Validated; II. Attested; III. Disputed. In the first category we find 36 synagogues; in the second 48; in the third 59, divided into two subcategories: III A. attributed (12 on the list, but only 10 in the book), which means that the ruins lack any Jewish inscription or motifs, but are identified as the remains of a synagogue by some scholars; and III B. not accepted (47), which means that they also lack any Jewish motif, but the attribution as remains of a synagogue is questionable on the basis of the present evidence.
To start with the third category. The assumption seems to be that unless the evidence proves the contrary all claims made for the identification of a ruin as a synagogue must to be accepted, even if the basis for such a claim is minimal at the best. A pair of examples: Gus Halav B (p. 45): The basis for postulating a synagogue beneath the Maronite Church is the similarity of some elements, used anew in the Church, with the synagogue of Gus Halav A. But nothing proves that these elements do not come from this synagogue, all the more so since (as the author recognizes) the evidence drawn from the excavation beneath the Church is "meager". In the case of the Samaritan synagogue of Ramat Aviv (pp. 165-167) the excavator himself describes the remains as a Samaritan Church.
The biggest problems are with the second category. According to the author's definition this category includes: "Architectural or decorative fragments bear Jewish inscriptions and/or motifs from a Synagogue; location of the building is unknown" (p. 2) A look into the 48 cases of this category shows that in general there are no architectural remains as such, and the only basis to postulate the existence of a synagogue are ornamental elements found in,'or related to, the place. In 17 cases the only element which is available is a menorah, generally carved on a lintel, found in the place or used again in a village house. Using the same principle any stone decorated with a cross (including a good number of cases in which both symbols have been found together) would indicate the existence of a Christian church. A few examples chosen at random from the beginning and the end of the book: Ki'ilya (p. 15): "Several capitals were found in the area of Ki'ilya; one was decorated with a menorah. Fragments of a white mosaic pavement also were reported in the courtyard of Yusuf Qassis". Gadara (p. 313): "A stone, now at the Louvre, was found built into a modern house in Tiberias; according to the occupant, the stone was found at Gadara. Measuring approximately 38 x 86 cm., the stone is decorated with a wreath tied with a Hercules knot, inside of which is a bur- ning seven-branched menorah standing on a tripod base flanked by a lulab and sofar. In each of the stone's four corners is a rosette. Another stone, also decorated with a menorah, is in the Hospice of the Franciscan Fathers in Jerusalem. Its provenance is unknown, but it too was reported found in Tiberias; but it may be from Gadara". What the casual discovery of a menorah or the like has to do with synagogue architecture is anybody's guess, but the problem is that the author has incorporated the category I and II in the Tables 8 through 12, giving a distorted impression of the reality.
Even if we ascribe to the author's categories, her attribution of the architectural remains to one or another seems sometimes a bit arbitrary. This is the case with many of the distinctions between III A and III B, because nowhere are criteria to be found for questioning and not accepting the attributions. The same goes, more strangely, for categories II and III. A case in point is Hirbet Jabatra (p. 78): "One of the building's stones appears to have been decorated with a five-branched menorah flanked by two objects, possibly a lulab and etrog. A debased Ionic capital also was found in the debris. In the summer of 1974 Adam Drucks of the Israel Department of Antiquities made a cut into the hill and discovered the outer wall of a public building. The wall measured 15 meters long with remains up to three meters high. The building has not been excavated. It is unclear whether the stone remains reported earlier belong to the public building Drucks uncovered. The evidence is too inconclusive to make an attribution". But nevertheless the author places it in the category II as an attested synagogue.
The book is well indexed, although there are no distinctions between the references to the main entry of a place and occasional ones. The small size of the plans and the poor quality of the reproduction of the map are certainly a handicap for a handbook. In spite of S.'s efforts, a handbook of Synagogue Architecture is still a desideratum.

Mammal-Like Reptiles and the Origin of Mammals

Evolutionists repeatedly claim that their assembled chain of mammal-like reptiles shows a step-by-step morphological progression to mammals. Despite this, a close and simultaneous examination of hundreds of anatomical character traits shows no such thing, even if one takes basic evolutionary suppositions as a given. Very many, if not most, of the pelycosaur and therapsid traits used in recent evolutionistic studies to construct cladograms actually show a contradictory pattern of progression towards, followed by reversion away from, the presumed eventual mammalian condition. Furthermore, gaps are systematic throughout the pelycosaur-therapsid-mammalian ‘sequence’, and these gaps are actually larger than the existing segments of the ‘chain’. These sobering facts demonstrate that, however the supposed evolutionary ‘lineage’ of mammal-like reptiles towards mammals is interpreted, it is divorced from reality.

Very many, if not most, of the pelycosaur and therapsid traits used in recent evolutionistic studies to construct cladograms actually show a contradictory pattern of progression towards, followed by reversion away from, the presumed eventual mammalian condition. Furthermore, gaps are systematic throughout the pelycosaur-therapsid-mammalian ‘sequence’, and these gaps are actually larger than the existing segments of the ‘chain’. These sobering facts demonstrate that, however the supposed evolutionary ‘lineage’ of mammal-like reptiles towards mammals is interpreted, it is divorced from reality.
